Everything families want to know before getting started.
There is no single best time to start, but earlier is almost always better. Families who begin in 9th or 10th grade have more time to be intentional about course selection, activities, and building a thoughtful, authentic application. That said, even students who come to me in senior year can benefit enormously. If you are unsure, reach out and we can talk through what makes sense for your student.
The perspective. Having worked as a college admissions reader, I know firsthand how applications are evaluated: what actually stands out, what gets overlooked, and what admissions readers are really looking for. That inside knowledge shapes every part of the work, from how we build the college list to how we approach essays.
No, and that is intentional. Your student does the writing. My role is to help them find their voice, develop their ideas, and sharpen their work through brainstorming, feedback, and revision. The final essay should sound exactly like them, not like a template. Colleges are looking for authentic voice, and that can only come from your student.
Quality over quantity. Most students apply to between 10 and 14 schools with a thoughtful balance of reach, target, and likely options. The goal is not to apply everywhere, but to apply to the places where your student has a real chance and would genuinely thrive. We build that list together based on your student's profile and priorities.
Absolutely. The UC system is a significant part of the college conversation for California students, and the Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) require their own strategy. Students must answer 4 PIQs, but they choose from a bank of 8 questions. Part of the work is helping your student identify which 4 questions give them the strongest opportunity to show who they are. I have experience guiding students through that selection and the writing itself. If UCs are on your student's list, we will give them the attention they deserve.
Before our first meeting, your student will complete a comprehensive intake questionnaire covering academics, activities, interests, and goals. I review this in depth before we meet and come prepared with a preliminary college list and initial observations. From there, we work through the process together, building and refining the list, developing the application strategy, and guiding your student through essays, all at a pace that works for your family.
Both. Families can work with me on an hourly basis for targeted help, or choose from package options that provide comprehensive support through the full application process. For hourly clients, a one-time Intake and Prep Fee is collected before our first meeting to cover the preparation work done in advance. Reach out and we can talk through what makes the most sense for where you are in the process.
Yes, and for many families this is one of the most valuable parts of working together. The college process can create real tension at home. Deadlines, essays, and big decisions can put a strain on the parent-student dynamic, and having a knowledgeable outside voice can take some of that pressure off. I serve as a neutral, supportive guide for your student: someone who holds them accountable, keeps the process moving, and helps them do their best work without it becoming a source of conflict. Parents stay informed, students stay on track, and everything feels a lot more manageable for everyone.
Both. In-person sessions are available in North Orange County, CA. Virtual sessions via Zoom are available for families anywhere in the country. Most families find a mix of both works well — particularly for early meetings and essay reviews.
The best way to find out is to have a conversation. Reach out to schedule an introductory call — just a chance to talk about your student, ask questions, and get a feel for the approach. If it feels like the right fit for both of us, we go from there. Reach out any time to get that conversation started.
