What actually matters
in a college application.

Admissions readers are not looking for a perfect formula. They are looking for substance, reflection, and a clear sense of who a student is beyond a resume. That is what this work is built around. Helping your student understand who they are, and building an application that shows it clearly.

What you've done
matters less than
what it meant to you.

That meaning is what makes a story only the student can tell.

The approach here is grounded in two things: authenticity and impact. First, clarifying who your student really is. Then building a profile that shows meaningful engagement and genuine contribution, not just a list of activities.

What colleges want to see is genuine depth: students who have focused on what deeply matters to them and can speak to what those experiences have meant to them. Beyond activities and achievements, admissions readers are looking for evidence of growth: how your student has navigated challenges, what they have learned, and whether they show self-awareness, curiosity, and a readiness to engage with the world beyond high school.

That clarity becomes the foundation for a well-balanced college list, a thoughtful strategy, and an application that truly reflects who your student is.

Balanced Method College Advising is led by Kathy Green, a former college admissions reader with firsthand experience evaluating applications and a clear understanding of what actually makes a student stand out.

Before founding Balanced Method, Kathy built a career grounded in analytical thinking and strategic problem solving, first in finance and commercial lending, and later in product management at a global technology company, where she managed complex product launches across engineering, operations, marketing, and sales. She brings that same rigor and intentionality to every student she works with.

After years in the corporate world, Kathy moved into college admissions reading, gaining firsthand experience evaluating applications and a clear understanding of what actually makes a student stand out. That work confirmed a belief she already held: the students who stand out are rarely the ones with the longest list of activities. They are the ones who know who they are and can show it.

She started Balanced Method because she believes the college search deserves more than a checklist. Finding the right fit matters in a way that goes far beyond admissions. The four years a student spends in college are one of the most formative chapters of their life, the friendships, the growth, the process of figuring out who you are and what you stand for. Getting that right is worth doing with care.

As a parent who has navigated this process with her own children, she understands what it feels like from the inside, the stakes, the uncertainty, and how much a thoughtful and well matched college experience can shape a person for the rest of their life.

Kathy works closely with each student and family to identify the best college fit, build a thoughtful and realistic list, and guide applications that feel considered and true to who your student is. Her approach is personal, unhurried, and built around your student as an individual. Not a formula.

"I partner with students and families who value depth over checklists, intention over noise, and a process that leads to both acceptance and a strong sense of self."

"I always felt like I was two completely different people. The musical, creative side and the more technical, academic side. I could not figure out how to put them in the same essay without it feeling forced. Kathy helped me see that the tension between them was actually the most interesting thing about me. Writing the essay felt impossible until she helped me see that both sides together were what set me apart."

"Kathy joined us senior year when the pressure was already high. What changed immediately was the dynamic at home. Suddenly our daughter had someone in her corner who wasn't us, someone who kept her focused, held her accountable, and helped her find her own voice. That clarity showed up in every part of the application. She got into her first choice school in the right major. That says everything."

"We came in not knowing where to start. Kathy brought a calm, structured approach that took the pressure off our family. She has a real gift for drawing out what makes a student stand out, and she does it without putting words in their mouth. She regularly checked in, gave feedback, and made helpful suggestions along the way. She was truly invested in our daughter and helped her applications highlight her strengths and individual personality and abilities. She listened to our daughter's desires for her college experience and aided her in finding the right fit. Kathy put our minds at ease and made the process as seamless and smooth as it could possibly go. We couldn't be happier with how the process unfolded and are so grateful for Kathy!"
